Poker is a card game, the most popular of a class of games called vying games, in which players with fully or partially concealed cards make wagers into a central pot, which is awarded to the player or players with the best combination of cards or to the player who makes an uncalledcan also refer to video poker, a single-player game seen in casinos much like a slot machine, or to other games that use poker hand rankings.

Poker is played in a multitude of variations, but most follow the same basic pattern of play.

The dealer shuffles the cards, he cuts, and the appropriate number of cards are dealt to the players one at a time. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker beingthe initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins. Between rounds, the players' hands develop in some way, often by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards previously dealt.

The ability to win a pot without showing a hand makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.

At the end of the last betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown, in which the players reveal their previously hidden cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot.

The most popular poker variants are as follows:

Draw poker Players each receive five as in five-card draw or more cards, all of which arecan then replace one or more of these cards a certain number of times. Stud poker Players receive cards one at a time, some being displayed to other players at the nity card poker Players combine individually dealt cards with a number of "community cards" dealt face up and shared by allor four individual cards may be dealt in the most popular variations, Texas hold 'em and Omaha hold 'em, respectively.

The history of poker is a matter of somename of the game likely descended from the French poque, which descended from the German pochen ('to knock'). Yet it is not clear whether the origins of poker itself lie with the games bearing thoseclosely resembles the Persian game of as nas, and may have been taught to French settlers in New Orleans by Persian sailors. It is commonly regarded as sharing ancestry with the Renaissance game of primero and the French brelan.

The English game brag (earlier bragg) clearly descended from brelan and incorporated bluffing (though the concept was known in other games by that time). It is quite possible that all of these earlier games influenced the development of poker as it exists now.

Soon after this spread, the full 52-card English deck was used, and the flush was introduced. During the American Civil War, many additions were made, including draw poker, stud poker (the five-card variant), and the er American developments followed, such as the wild card (around 1875), lowball and split-pot poker (around 1900), and community card poker games (around 1925).The spread of the game to other countries, particularly in Asia, is often attributed to the U.

The game and jargon of poker have become important parts of American culture and Englishphrases and clichés as ace in the hole, ace up one's sleeve, beats me, blue chip, call one's bluff, cash in, high roller, pass the buck, poker face, stack up, up the ante, when the chips are down, wild card, and others are used in everyday conversation, even by those unaware of their origins at the poker table.

Modern tournament play became popular in American casinos after the World Series of Poker began, in 1970.Notable champions from these early WSOP tournaments include Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, and Doyle Brunson. It was also during that decade that the first serious strategy books appeared, notably Super/System by Doyle Brunson (ISBN 1-58042-081-8) and The Book of Tells by Mike Caro (ISBN 0-89746-100-2), followed later by The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky (ISBN 1-880685-00-0).

This page describes the ranking of pokerapplies to the game of poker of course, but is also used in other card games such as Chinese Poker, Chicago, Poker Menteur and Pai Gow Poker.

Poker Hand Ranking with Wild Cards

A poker hand consists of fivecategories of hand, from highest to lowest, are listed below. Any hand in a higher category beats any hand in a lower category (so for example any three of a kind beats any two pairs).

In games where a player has more than five cards and selects five to form a poker hand, the remaining cards do not play any part in theranks are always based on five cards only.

Some readers may wonder why I deal with how to compare (say) two threes of a kind of equal rank. This obviously cannot arise in basic draw poker, but such comparisons are needed in poker games using shared (community) cards, such as Texas Hold'em, in poker games with wild cards, and in other card games using poker combinations, such as poker menteur.

This is the highest pokerconsists of ace, king, queen, jack, ten, all in the same suit. As all suits are equal, all royal flushes are equal.

The fifth card can be anything. This combination is sometimes known as "quads", and in some parts of Europe it is called a "poker", though this term for it is unknown in en two fours of a kind, the one with the higher set of four cards is higher - so 3-3-3-3-A is beaten by 4-4-4-4-2. It can't happen in standard poker, but if in some other game you need to compare two fours of a kind where the sets of four cards are of the same rank, then the one with the higher fifth card is better.

In standard poker there is no ranking oftwo hands are identical apart from the suits of the cards then they count as equal. In standard poker, if there are two highest equal hands in a showdown, the pot is split between them.

However, Franco Pratesi has informed me that in Italy there is a generally accepted ranking of suits inranking is: hearts (high), diamonds, clubs, spades (low). These ranks are used to break ties between otherwise equal hands.

The ranking order of poker hands corresponds to their probability of occurring in straight poker, where five cards are dealt from a 52-card deck, with no wild cards and no opportunity to use extra cards to improve ararer a hand the higher it ranks.

Mark Brader has provided probability tables showing the frequency of each poker hand type when five cards are dealt from a 52-card deck, and also showing how these probabilities would change if multiple decks were used.

1 The fundamental theorem of poker

2 Pot odds and poker probabilities

Poker strategy is a complexarticle only attempts to introduce basic strategy concepts.

The fundamental theorem of poker introduced by David Sklansky, states that every time you play your hand the way you would if you could see your opponent's cards, you gain, and every time your opponent plays his cards differently from the way he would play them if he could see your cards, you gain.[1] This theorem is the foundation for many poker strategyexample, bluffing and slow-playing (explained below) are examples of using deception to induce your opponents to play differently than they would if they could see your cards. There are some exceptions to the fundamental theorem in certain multi-way pot situations, as described in Morton's theorem.

See the articles on the fundamental theorem of poker and Morton's theorem for more details.

The relationship between pot odds and odds of winning is one of the most important concepts in pokerhave a positive expectation, a player's odds of winning must be at least equal to his pot odds.

See the article on poker probability for more about determining the odds of having certain hands.

By employing deception, a poker player hopes to induce his opponent(s) to act differently than they would if they could see his ing is a form of deception to induce opponents to fold superior hands. Against observant opponents, it is necessary for a player to bluff sometimes to induce opponents to call his bets when he actually does have a superior hand.

If opponents observe that a player never bluffs, they won't call his bets unless they have very good hands. Slow-playing (also called "sandbagging") is deceptive play in poker that is roughly the opposite of bluffing: betting weakly with a strong holding rather than betting strongly with a weak one.

The blinds and antes and limit structure of the game has a significant influence on pokerexample, it is easier to manipulate pot odds in no-limit and pot-limit games than in limit games.

If you like my poker dictionary, consider checking out my us Poker is a great way to get into the game, if I do say so myself.

More generally, advertising can mean anything you do at the poker table to manipulate how other players assess you.

The phrase "bad beat" is heard often in the phrase "bad beat stories," because many poker players, especially (but not exclusively) occasional or inexperienced players, love to tell stories about how rotten their luckpeople don't mind listening, or even enjoy these stories. Other people (especially jaded poker veterans who are pretty sure they've heard and seen it all) would sooner sit through eight hours of root canal surgery than listen to one bad beat story.

The total amount of money one is willing (and able) to put at risk. Many players keep poker bankrolls separate from their otheradequate playing bankroll for a particular game (assuming positive expectation) is an amount large enough to survive the expected swings due to variance. For a negative expectation game, an adequate bankroll is one which doesn't run out before you die.

Some players also limit their risk on a per-session basis, in effect playing with a session bankroll. Whether a bankroll is for poker in general, for poker this week, or for poker today, depends on how you manage your money.

Pot-limit and no-limit poker are sometimes referred to as big bet poker (as contrasted with limit games of any size). The "big" in a sense refers to the size of bets relative to the pot, irrespective of the amount of money involved.

A hand in poker without so much as a pair (i.e., any hand that will lose to a pair of 2's).A busted hand that missed a draw to a straight or a flush is a busted straight or a busted flush.

Cardrooms are the rooms in which poker is played, or the organizations that run thosecasinos that offer poker have a separate room, or at least a roped-off area, designated as thesome places where poker is legal, you will also find separate cardrooms (not part of a larger casino) dedicated mostly tothings to look for in a cardroom include tables, floorpeople, the brush, chips, etc.

Poker chips are also sometimes calledis mostly European (esp.

While check-raising is legal virtually everywhere serious poker is played, there are apparently a few public cardrooms which prohibit it at the lowestpoker games, which may be more or less serious, vary more widely.

Poker chips are small round discs used instead of money at the pokerones used at casinos are typically made of clay, while home poker games often substitute cheaper plasticchips instead of cash has a number of advantages, mostly just that they're easier to count and manipulate.

A format in which the dealer is allowed to select the particular poker game that will be imes this means before each hand, although a more sensible system (since in many games the dealer has a positional advantage) is one in which players take turns choosing the game for an entire round.

In a game played for low, deuce to seven usually means that the best low hand is simply the worst pokeryou haven't figured it out already, that hand is 75432, with no flush. Deuce to seven lowball is also called Kansas City, or Kansas City lowball.

In other poker games, drawing simply means staying in the game with the hope of improving your hand when more cards come (as opposed to with the intention of seeing if your hand is best).A draw means a way to improve. For example, if you have four suited cards, you have a flush draw.

To lose a particular amount of money. At poker, that is, you don't have to literally drop it on the carpet.

Expectation is the rate of profit (or loss) you would expect to make if there were no variance, or on average over a very large number of trials. A positive expectation poker player is one who, due to an advantage in poker skill over his/her opposition, will earn money in the long run.A negative expectation poker player is someone you want at your table.

The surface of most poker tables is made of some sort of felt, or is in any case referred to as such.A player who is running out of chips rapidly can be referred to as "down to the felt."

Fish-ness can also be relative. Common poker wisdom holds that if you can't find the fish at your table, you're it.
