Caro's Book of Poker Tells (Paperback) by Mike Caro (Author)
I have been playing NL poker online and limit poker in casinos for about twopreferred game is single table tournaments and after a year of success online I decided to put my skills to thebook really breaks down the art of poker (that is, the ability to read people)into simple categories of tells understandable and recognizeable bywith my technically sound online skills and my newfound ability to understand the motives and intetnions of other live players, I journeyed to Atlantic City to try my first ever live tournament.I finished in first place at the Borgata.
Caro breaks tells down into 2 mainfrom actors, and tells from those who aremost important are those from Actors. It is Caro's contention that all of us act at the poker table and in life, it is instinctive and largelyyou can pick up on these signals, discern what the player wants you to do, and then do the opposite, then you can truly, truly dominate the competition. This book is a MUST HAVE for the serious poker player.
I purchased this book along with Phil Gordon's 'The Real Deal' as a start to my Pokerwas an excellent choice for the beginner! Caro's Book of Poker Tells is a treasure trove of Poker Behavioral information I was immediately able to relate ng amatuer poker, I could recall incidents detailed in the book where I was taken in by many of the tells displayed, and where I had executed them 's an interesting look at how human behavior factors so prominantly into a game of ed, the photos are dates, and the poker tells cover ALL types of games, which, if you aren't familliar with all styles of poker, it might be , the book is formatted in a very easy to reference style, and isn't difficult to apply illustrations using one game tois a definite must for anyone who wants to improve their play as well as understand the psychological element of poker better.
A classic, and one of the most well known books on poker, it's been published again and again under different publishers with very slight changes over the 's one of the only books on tells, or body language in poker - a bit surprising, considering the hundreds of poker books in print, and the popular conception that tells are a huge part of the , also known as "the Mad Genius of Poker," is a top-level poker player, credited as the best draw player in thewas, at least - draw poker all but died out when other forms became legal in California, and he hasn't been heard from as much since dless, he's still extremely smart, a great teacher, and is always entertaining reading. The book covers around fifty different "tells," of variousare general profiling, such as what you can infer about an unfamiliar opponent's style by the way they dress or stack their chips. Most are behavioral - what it means when someone acts immediately, without pausing to think, when someone glances down at their chips after the flop, when they "splash" chips into the pot instead of stacking them, etc.A common theme is that "strong means weak" and "weak means strong" - when they sigh and shrug their shoulders as they raise, get out. It seems so basic, but often holds true even at relatively high levels.
Even those who play for thousands every day can't control their reactions when they're suddenly playing for millions. On the downside, the book's agepictures are grainy and black-and-white, and highlight fashion trends of the 1980s.Several of the tells are specific to draw poker, like determining whether a player who draws one has two pair or a four-flush; not very useful anymore, but stilleach tell, the text estimates how many weak, average, and strong players will exhibit the specific behavior, and gives a value for how much you can gain by understanding it and being observant. These are useful as generalizations, such as which will rarely apply in a higher limit game against more experienced players, but the "value per hour" figures are crazy.

Cardoza publishing has recently reprinted another poker classic, Mike Caro's Book of Pokerpoker books have been as widely read as this one, in it's third major revision since it's original publication by Gambling Times, Inc..I own a copy of one of the printings of the Gambling Times edition and the Cardoza es reviewing the book, I can compare these two versions of thisbetween the release of these was an edition published by the Mike Caro University of Poker, Gaming, and Life Strategy which I don't own.
Mike Caro's Book of Poker Tells begins with introductory material that explains what this book is about, an explanation of the nomenclature used, an explanation of the author's MCU Poker Charts, and a prologue about "Caro's Law of Loose Wiring".These last two weren't present in the Gambling Times edition. The introduction sets up the bookreader receives a good idea of the direction in which this book is headed.
Despite some minor flaws and the age of the book (20 years as of this review), Caro's Book of Poker Tells is still one of the most important poker books ever written, and it's great that this book is still inthis book will certainly be more relevant to live players than it will to the online game, its principles are timeless and are likely to be of benefit for any alert poker player in any pokerare multiple poker books available on every aspect of poker except forreason for this is because there is still little room for improvement on Caro's landmark work. Largely as a consequence of this, too little has been changed or added to make it necessary for someone who owns the original edition of this book to need to er, no poker library would be complete without a copy of this book.
Although I don't believe that every bit of information in this book is important or even useful, this is one of the absolute classics of poker scholarship, and every serious poker player should read and study itsthough the game may have changed in the last 20 years, the contents of Caro's Book of Poker Tells is still entirelythis time period, the book itself hasn't changed much, so folks who have the original edition do not need to buy a new one.

Most poker books focus on betting and how and when to play certainCaro's book is different because he focuses on how to use the tells of your opponents to your usly this book is not great for those who playis well respected in the poker world and the beginning of the book talks about how other experts value his work."Caro is primarily known as a teacher and a theorist, but beyond that--twice world poker champion Doyle Brunson calls him 'the best draw poker player alive,' while the late gambling expert John Scarne ranked him in the top five, and premier authority David Sklanskly has also rated him first in the world in that importanttoday, draw poker isn't even Mike Caro's strongest game.
Caro's Book of Poker Tells is broken up into tells where the player is unaware that he is doing anything unusual and tells when the player is acting.I tend to focus on the unaware tells because once a player starts acting then it is more of a guessing game in myis a saying that if you can't spot the sucker at a table then you're it. Fortunately my last 2 playing sessions I've been able to spot players who were giving out tells even though they were seeminglyfirst involved a loose player who played too many hands in my opinion. I quickly noticed that most of the times he did not have anything er on one hand his hands were shaking. I wasn't in the hand but I knew from Caro's book that he could very well have a powerful e reading Caro's book I may have thought that this player was shaking his hands because he was nervous about a weak er, Caro tells us that shaky hands are to beenough he turned over a full house after the river. From that point on I tried to get in pots with him.

Mike Caro has been giving away poker secrets for nearly three 's Book of Poker Tells, probably his most classic work, contains a good deal of information that has made its way into the pokeronline players who plan on playing live more often, this volume can still be a valuable source of information that can win them more money.
At the beginning of the Book of Poker Tells, Caro sets forth his Great Law of Tells: "Players are either acting or they aren't.If they are acting, then decide what they want you to do and disappoint them." Everything that's contained in this book follows from this Great Law, starting with the two main sections of the book: tells that come from actors and tells that come from those who aretells from those who are unaware are the ones most likely to make you money over the long haul, because they give you information that a player doesn't realize he's divulging.
To add to the information presented in the Book of Poker Tells, Caro includes photographs that demonstrate each of the tells that he'sall there are more than 170 of these photos in the se this book was originally published almost 30 years ago, the appearance of some of the players in the photos can be humorous to today'sof the photos are also more useful than others, especially for those players who are more accustomed to learning from video than from stillseeing the tells in action can sometimes make it hard to know exactly what one is looking for.(It's worth noting that Mr. Caro does have a DVD available which focuses on tells - it may be that those who have difficulty learning from the book will be more successful with the video.)Outside of examples involving people playing 5-card draw poker, this is probably the portion of the book that most shows it age.
Despite being one of the oldest poker books still in publication today, Caro's Book of Poker Tells is still a very usefulyou may have learned some of the information in the book from other sources to which it has trickled down over the years, it never hurts to go straight to the 's text is easy to read, often entertaining, and full of information necessary to crush the live game for all it's worth.
