Sklansky focuses on the math of poker--how to calculate odds, pot odds, reverse implied pot odds, 's not a fun read; it reminded me of some of the college textbooks I dreaded, but it rewards hard work with a new depth of insight that will make you a smarter, more insightful player. It deserves five stars but I gave it four because it can be so dreary.

Sklansky's The Theory of Poker has generally been reguarded as a classic since its initialwith Doyle Brunson's Super System and Mike Caro's Book of Poker Tells these three book were the the 1-2-3 knockout combo of pokerSystem covered many main types of poker specifically, Caro's Book of Tells covered much of the psychology of poker, but Sklansky's Theory of Poker was quite ad of focusing on one aspect of poker, Sklansky decided to focus on the "big picture".Odds, psychology, information, using these things in combination to make the correct decisions is what poker is allwith The Theory of Poker Sklansky wrote a book that attempted to teach you how to do just y stated, if you make more correct decisions than your opponent, and make less wrong decisions, then in the long wrong, you will win. Luck is the thing that keeps beginners and gamblers coming back to try and "hit it big".

Sklansky's Hold'Em Poker - Not much more complicated than Phil's book and offers more good ideas for the novice for getting 's Book of Poker Tells - Prettymost beginners should be able to grasp the concept of the tells and the psychological aspects ofbeware of others who've read this book. Intermediate: Sklansky's The Theory of Poker - Certainly a mustdefinitely get you thinking critically about the game. Doyle Brunson's Super System - A classic, but you won't be able to dominate the tables like Doyle used to.

Required poker foundation Sklansky's Theory of Poker is no longer the newest book on advanced poker thought, but it remains required reading for both the average and the more experienced player.

Probably the single most important book ever written on poker is ``The Theory of Poker'' by David Sklansky [87].Written in 1987, it was the first book to correctly identify many of the underlying strategic principles ofconcepts are illustrated with examples from Texas Hold'em, Seven-Card-Stud, Five-Card-Draw, Seven-Card-Lowball, and Lowball-Draw, but they are equally applicable to all variations of poker.

This is a good book to understand more deeply the concepts, theory and idea behind poker.I would not recomend this book to a beginner, since it takes quite some experience to really appreciate everything. As always when Sklansky writes, it is easy to follow and understand.

The theory of poker by David Sklansky is exactly what is it says on the cover....If you are like me, by saying that i mean a poker player who understands that there is an actual hidden law to the game, then you will appreciate this bookbook and its ideas are all very well put forward, and contains invaluable tactics for Hold Em, Seven Card Stud and Razz. I should point out here though that the books complete focus is on Cash game poker, notpeople reading will undoubtley know that there is an immense difference between playing in a tournament and a cash game. I bought the book at the beginning of the year after finding myself running through a bad spell, and thought it would be beneficial to take some time away from the table and refresh my thinking on the game.

Think about that for a second, and what it says about how fundamentally revolutionary the concepts Sklansky presents must be, that players still consider this book among the most important ever put into print. You'll still find this book on the bookshelves of every serious poker player, and I, along with most serious amateurs I know, refer to it on a continuingso-called "classic" books, such as Brunson's first Super System and even the first printing of both Jones' and Sklansky & Malmuth's books were outstanding in their time, but most acknowledge that they have since lost their applicability to the more aggressive modern game. Theory of Poker, however, stands as a shining exception to these other outdated books, and continues to be what I believe to be the most important book for any and every pokeraddition, Sklansky discusses many different poker games, and not just hold'em which seems to be all the rage at the standing how the theoretical concepts he discusses apply to different games really helps reinforce the underlying reasoning.

I do not write strategy posts. I do not write theory posts.I do this because, despite the fun I have playing poker, I'm better at telling stories than explaining how I play or offering helpful advice to people looking to improve theirthat disclaimer, the past six weeks have been pretty interesting. I've laid down pocket aces three times on the flop.

It's not any new theory, or anything.I guess it just surprises me that with all the good poker information out there, some people are still treating poker like a gamble instead of an 's more, I'm starting to see more and more of these guys in the middle no-limit area. It's both fascinating and disturbing to watch.

The truth is any idiot can consume enough of the basics to become an average player without much time at the table. The intermediate player can still win, by dutiful adherance to the "Theory of Poker", but there's a plateau, and we've all been there.
